How to deal with Benefits medical examinations
NEVER FACE THEM ALONE
This article describes how claimants for disability benefits can deal with the medical examinations run by the private company ATOS on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). These tests are central in deciding whether or not you are entitled to disability benefits and it’s vital not to attend them alone. You have the right to take someone with you into the test and it’s very important that you do so. This could be a friend, an adviser from a welfare rights group or anyone you trust.
If there isn’t anyone you know who could accompany you, one of us from North Edinburgh Fights Back would try and go with you. Please e mail us , if possible leaving your phone number so we can easily get in touch. Please try and give us as much notice as possible, though it’s usually possible to change the date of appointments.
We would like our members and supporters to contact your local councillor or MSP and make a complaint about Cllr Morris’ remarks, as published in the Evening News. Calling members of our community ‘rabid’ is insulting to all of us, and trying to bully community run centres into not hosting our events is undemocratic and unforgivable. Please send an e-mail to your local councillors (this website is very helpful – http://www.writetothem.com/), and also to First Minister Alex Salmond to express your disgust at councillor Morris. His e-mail addresses are as follows – Alex.Salmond.msp@scottish.parliament.uk – FirstMinister@scotland.gsi.gov.uk. Thanks for your continued support!
